How to recover individual files
How to recover entire directories or filesystems
How to recover each type of database (or application with special handling requirements) in the backup environment
How to recover backups without the use of file indices if the backup software (and situation) supports it
How to recover from backup duplicates or media duplicates if supported by the backup software in use
How to re-index backups for file-browse recovery or in the event of backup software database corruption
How to recover the backup system, its configuration, and associated databases

Each type of recovery should be documented for each type of operating system in use, even if it is not technically required; this facilitates the use of the documentation by multiple administration groups, and also prevents such issues as “I can’t find the documentation to recover my operating system — it only gives examples for operating system X”

Any caveats with the recovery process (e.g., “database X must be shut down to allow recovery to take place,” or “recoveries cannot be started within an hour of the backups commencing without management approval,” etc.)

References to any SLAs that will be used to guide the recovery process
If parts of the environment are outsourced, documentation on the roles and responsibilities of both company-internal staff and staff from the outsourcer must be included

Details on how to initiate a manual/ad-hoc backup for each application or database with special backup requirements
Any caveats associated with running any of the above backups (e.g., “when running ad-hoc backups make sure the retention time is set, or else the backup system will set a retention time of one year”)
Reference to any corporate policies that must be followed in relation to the use of the backup system
References to any other documentation that can be used when working with the backup environment
